Gum legend Jack Nicklaus told the world on Wednesday who he voted for in this year’s U.S. presidential election: the current president, Donald Trump.
Nicklaus tweeted that Trump had “fulfilled his promises” and would “bring the American Dream to many families across the country who are still trying to fulfill it.”
The 80-year-old Golden Bear has said he is ready to give in to Trump’s Twitter habits – he said he himself has teased about them – and focus on politics instead.
“This is not a personality contest,” Nicklaus wrote. “It’s about patriotism, politics and the people who influence it.”
He also encouraged people to vote. Election Day is November 3 but the first round of voting has been going on across the country for weeks.
Golf fan Trump tweeted Nicklaus’ approval quickly and he hit the top of Twitter.
Nicklaus is from Ohio, the state where Trump won the 2016 election. Former President Barack Obama took over the state for the Democratic Party in 2008 and 2012. The average of the Real Politics survey Trump shows up in a close race with former Vice President Joe Biden, the 2020 Democratic nominee, in Buckeye State.
Nicklaus was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005 by George W. Bush, the country’s highest civilian honor. His 18 major champions remain on record, three ahead of Tiger Woods, who won the Medal of Freedom from Trump last year.
